Just what I need, a good computer blog …. no geek speak please.
Can you tell me about partitioning, what does it do and do I need it.
Best way to look after the memory (eg how often to defrag or cleanup).
When using clean up how do I know which files to delete.
Is there a way of storing files you hardly ever use so you don’t use as much memory.
How can I get rid of some of the windows programmes I never use.
Thank you
Hiya Sally,
Thank you for being the first person to post on Computer Products new web blog,
Partition the hard drive can have many benefits , If you were to have say a 500gb hard drive then you could partion this into particular catergories for instance you could have 250gb for your main system partition which includes your operating system and program files and then have another 250gb for your download, work files and music, that way the system drive doesnt become inflated with fragmented files.
Which regards to defragmenting your hard drive this is usually based upon computer usage so that if you are constantly using your computer then you should periodically check for frgmentation by navigating to programs accesories and systom tools and choosing disk defragmenter then right clicking on the assocaited drive and choosing anylize this will perform and let you know if the drive needs defragmenting.
Disk Cleanup
When performaing a disk cleanup your are you have the option of deleting files which have become redundent and useless like internet history files and old system cache files , You will be given the option of deleting these files or keep them the options should look like below.
Downloaded Program Files: ActiveX controls and Java applets that are automatically downloaded from the internet during browsing.
Temporary Internet Files: Webpages stored on your hard disk to help speed up viewing.
Hibernation File Cleaner: Contains information regarding your currently active programs as it enters hibernation
Office Setup Files: Installation files used by Microsoft Windows Office.
Recycle Bin: Contains files that were previously deleted from your system.
Setup Log Files: Files created by Windows Vista.
System error memory dump files: System error memory dump files
System error minidump files: System error minidump files.
Temporary Files: Files temporarily saved in the Windows TEMP folder.
Thumbnails: Copies of all your pictures, video, and document thumbnails so they can be displayed much quicker when browsing.
Per user archived Windows Error Reports: Error reporting and solution checking files.
Per user queued Windows Error Reports: Error reporting and solution checking files.
System archived Windows Error Reports: Error reporting and solution checking files.
System queued Windows Error Reports: Error reporting and solution checking
To say these can all be deleted with no effect would be an irresponsible comment ,
For instance if you delete internet history and you use your interent history to keep your login details on a particular website then you should have a copy of these details place somewhere safe to refer back to.
I will be back for the remainder of your questions shortly
